We are at a cross roads for balancing sustainable business, care for the environment and the ability to adequately feed the
world's population. Wasting food is a huge factor that we are careless and struggling with.
People are constantly reminded of how wasting food is bad. They never listen, food is continued to be wasted and what they don’t realise is how much it is impacting the world and how much it is going to affect the world in just a few years time.
Today, there are already so many people in the world that go hungry. If we don’t start doing things like preserving food, in a few years time, there will be many more people that go undernourished or even starve. It is predicted that in 2050 there will be 2 billion more people on the earth. If many people are going hungry now, it will be much worse with 2 billion more people.
Approximately 40 percent of food in the U.S. goes to waste. Majority of this is the consumers which shows that household wastage is the worst and needs to be improved. Food wastage is one of the worst problems and is the reason for so many people going hungry. If we reduce the mass amounts of food we waste, the big issue of world hunger will reduce greatly too. The environment is also in danger. 33 million tons of food makes it's way to landfill each year. Reducing our food waste is not only good for world hunger but will also save the environment considerably.
We believe our solution is the most practical and effective solution for food sustainability because it is so easy to do and there are many advantages (and only a few disadvantages) that will improve daily lives like saving money. If 1.3 billion tons of food is wasted every year and our solution reduces this, there will be more than enough food to feed everyone, even the people who can't afford it because lots of food would be cheaper or donated.
If food is wasted, it means that all the resources and inputs used in the production of the food are lost. Australia produces enough food to feed approximately 60 million people, yet 2 million people still rely on food relief or donations each year.
This image below highlights some of the statistics of food wastage and costs that are just in Australia.
