Majority of the supermarkets around the globe waste tonnes of edible food. Australian stores waste an average of 4 million tonnes a year. Approximately 20-40% of fruit and vegetables are rejected even before they reach the shops, mostly because they don’t match the consumer’s high standards. Some supermarkets do provide a section for down priced foods that have either been dented/out of shape or are near the use-by date but the stores do not advertise this enough and food is still being wasted as customers choose not to buy from this section or don’t know about it all together. Supermarkets are one of the worst food wasters, but this can be prevented. If supermarkets donate the food that's still in date to homeless shelters and/or other countries that aren't getting enough food, the wastage would rapidly decrease. Stores should also put there discounted foods in an easy-to-spot place and advertise it more. These solutions will help in the future when the world's population increases because the amount of homeless/undernourished people will increase, but they will then be able to get some of the foods they need and will be using all food produced.
